Issues to consider when having a home extension built – by Builders Cheltenham

If your family is growing, it may be that your existing home is no longer able to meet your family's space requirements. You may have another baby on the way, or your children are growing older that they are soon going to need to have their own rooms. Some homeowners move to a bigger home. However, if moving to a new home is not an option for you and your family, you can go with home extensions. Buying a bigger home means you'll need to spend more money; a home extension is comparatively cheaper.

There are some things you need to consider when you are planning to have an extension built. For one, you need to determine your

current room or space needs. Do you really need to have a home extension? While it's less expensive than buying a new home, it is still a major financial investment. How much can you afford for a home extension?

You also need to check if there are legal issues in your area that will preclude you from having a home extension built. Some homeowners have been unable to add home extensions because their property happens to be in a conservation area or a heritage site.

Make sure you talk with a reputable and experienced architect with whom you can discuss your plans and explain exactly what you want the home extension to look like once it's finished. An architect can make a sketch of your home extension and include measurements and other details. Before you start with the construction, show the home extension plan to your town or city's local council planning office and get it approved.

Ask the architect to consider not just the home extension's ventilation and lighting, but also that of your existing home. Make sure the doors and windows of the extension are installed in a way that promotes good air circulation throughout the entire house. Your home, including the extension, must receive adequate amounts of sunlight every day, and it shouldn't be overly bright or dark. Also consider privacy when planning where to install doors and windows.

Expect additional expenses while your home extension is being constructed. For instance, if the extension is going to take part of your garden area, you'll need to budget for landscaping your garden again. If you are having your kitchen extended, it will need to be fitted again.
